Designing and managing forests and woodlands to reduce flood risk – a new guide

The Forestry Commissions research department Forest Research in collaboration with Natural Resources Wales, Scottish Forestry, and Northern Ireland Forest Service have published the first UK-wide guide outlining the role woodlands can play in reducing the impacts of flooding on vulnerable communities.

The new guide provides advice for landowners, woodland managers, and local authorities on how to modify the design of the woodlands to enhance flood benefits, amend the scale, timing and type of woodland operations to minimise the impact of flood risk and run-off, and where and how to use leaky dams to slow flood flows.

The guide is available to download from the Forest Research website: Designing and managing forests and woodlands to reduce flood risk – Forest Research
