Also known as an extended phase 1 habitats survey, ecological walkover survey, or ecological scoping survey the preliminary ecological appraisal (PEA) is the first step in assessing the ecological value of your site.
The preliminary ecological appraisal comprises a walkover survey of the site to map habitats and structures on the site, and assess their suitability to support notable or protected species, followed by a desk study and the compilation of a written assessment / report.
The report produced as part of the PEA will contain a Phase 1 or UK Hab habitats map, highlight any ecological constraints and features of ecological value identified during the walkover survey, and detail any requirements for further surveys (usually for protected species) in order to inform the design of your development and minimise the impact on biodiversity.
PEA’s can be conducted all year round but are best conducted during the growing season of April to September.
