Terrestrial invertebrates and your development
There are over 32000 species of terrestrial invertebrate in the UK, many of which are critically endangered. Habitats such as traditional orchards, ancient woodland, flower-rich grassland, church yards, quarries, scrubland, and brown field sites are often home to diverse communities of invertebrates. If your extended phase 1 habitats survey / preliminary ecological appraisal identifies suitable habitat, or records indicate the possible presence of species of conservation interest further surveys may be required.
Terrestrial invertebrate surveys are conducted between March and October with the peak season of May to mid-September, using a variety of techniques suitable to the habitat which may include direct observation, hand searching, sweep netting, suction sampling, beating, pitfall traps, malaise traps, pheromone lures, bait traps, light traps, and sieving.
